Hand Lettering with Flourishes

Today's installment of lovely little lettering goes over flourishes--what they are, how to use them, and when to use them.

Flourishes can be a fun extra touch to your hand lettering, and when used in moderation, can be quite lovely.  Flourishes use the same principles as forming letters. Upstrokes and downstrokes are the foundation for everything in hand lettering, and flourishes are no exception!

There are fundamentally three kinds of flourishes that can be combined in any way to suit your style: Swirls, spirals, and loops.

As I mentioned in the video, I suggest going sparingly on flourishes. That being said, I also encourage you to find your own unique style! I know many professional calligraphers that just flourish their little hearts out and it looks gorgeous. Just because it isn't my personal style does NOT mean that it can't be yours--you do you! Continue practicing to find what suits your own taste.

Have a lovely little day!
