Common Mistakes in Hand Lettering



Hello! Today's installment of lovely little lettering is all about fixing the common mistakes in hand lettering. All three of these mistakes are issues that will become easier the more frequently you practice, especially if you start each practice with a good warm up.

Like I mentioned, these mistakes will become easier and easier to overcome the more consistently you practice, especially once you recognize that these three things I mentioned are inconsistencies you might be trying to overcome. Of course, there are a ton of different ways to hand letter, and perhaps you like a loose, less consistent, casual look. And that is totally fine! I love this quote from Picasso:
"Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist."
I love playing around with different styles, but it is nice to have a foundation in formal word formation, and to branch out from there. A future post will go over variants in lettering, but for now, have fun exploring your own unique style while still paying heed to these principles.
